Canada Freezes $43M in Suspicious Tesla Rebates. Tesla’s Claim of 1.5 Sales Per Minute Prompts Government to “Fully Examine Each Claim Individually.”

Looks like Tesla’s reliance on government subsidies has finally hit a wall in Canada.

After Tesla requested reimbursement for an unprecedented 8,669 Canadian EV rebates in just three days, the Canadian government froze Tesla’s rebate payments and paused all future eligibility for federal rebates.

For those keeping score, Tesla claimed to sell 1.5 vehicles per minute, a huge spike that came after the company was alerted that the rebate fund would run out. Kudos to the Toronto Star for once again breaking the story!

$43 million in Tesla rebate payments frozen and future subsidies paused

Payments to Tesla are frozen for the $43 million in claimed EV rebates, until the government can “fully examine each claim individually,” according to a statement from Transport Minister Chrystia Freeland. Further eligibility for rebates is revoked while tariffs are in place between the USA and Canada.

Why? Because, in a twist that everyone saw coming, Canada’s Transport Minister has issued a stop-payment order on the staggering $43 million in iZEV rebates Tesla claimed.

The government is now auditing those suspiciously great sales numbers with the cold-eyed scrutiny that would be applied to any foreign government officeholder reporting unprecedented sales numbers amid publicly disparaging statements toward Canada.

A Quick Refresher on Tesla’s Unbelievable Sales Weekend

If you missed it, we covered Tesla’s absolutely bonkers January 2025 sales numbers in Canada about 2 weeks ago.

In short:

  • The Canadian government announced the federal EV rebate program would end in several weeks.
  • Suddenly, Teslas started flying off the lot faster than trays of poutine at a hockey game, with dealerships claiming 1.5 sales per minute until the rebate fund ran dry just days later.
  • Canadian governmental data confirmed this improbable sales spike.

We speculated that either:

  • Tesla had pulled off the greatest automotive sales feat in Canadian history.
  • Or… Something altogether more exciting had occurred.

Well, it turns out that Transport Canada is just as suspicious as we are: they’ve frozen the rebate payments for Tesla pending a governmental review “of each claim individually.”

Tesla is Now Excluded from EV Incentives in 4 Out of 10 Canadian Provinces

Payments on previously made sales eligible EV sales are on hold for Tesla, as of today’s announcement. Moving forward, no further EV rebates will be available to Tesla while tariffs are in place.

To add insult to audit, multiple Canadian provinces have already kicked Tesla out of their own province-level rebate programs. Nova Scotia, Manitoba, British Columbia, and most recently Prince Edward Island have all dropped Tesla from eligibility.

The federal freeze means Tesla is now barred from the national iZEV program as well, at least until the tariff situation is resolved.

None of this is good news for Tesla, which has come to rely on Canadian sales. Canada was Tesla’s fifth-largest market in 2023, the last year we have full data for, trailing only the USA, China, Germany, and France.

Unfortunately, Tesla’s luck isn’t much better in those other countries:

  • In the USA, Germany, and France, arson attacks on Tesla vehicles have become distressingly commonplace.
  • In China, Tesla’s signature self-driving system free trial was just disabled pending regulatory review just today.
  • And now, in Canada, the company is about to get audited by the newly elected “Elbows Up” school of Canadian diplomacy.

“Canada Is Not a Real Country,” Says Musk of His 5th Largest Customer Base

Some context from last month that informs public opinion about Tesla Inc in Canada.

After a group of Canadians submitted a petition to Prime Minister Trudeau asking for Musk’s Canadian citizenship to be revoked, the world’s richest man responded in the most Twitter way possible:

“Canada is Not a Real Country.”

Yes, that is an actual quote from Musk… who, by the way, was born in South Africa but holds Canadian citizenship through his Canadian-born mother.

Canada is not a real country deleted Tweeted

Musk deleted the tweet (in a rare moment of self-awareness), but the internet never forgets. The screenshots live on, a testament to the man’s unique talent for throwing (very environmentally unfriendly) gasoline on already flaming PR dumpster fires.

Pro Tip: Don’t Mess with Canada

Now, I know Canadians are famously polite, but don’t mistake hospitality for weakness.

Need a reminder? Canada’s trench warfare tactics during WWI were so brutal they helped inspire the Geneva Conventions.

That’s right: Canadians were so terrifyingly merciless in battle that Imperial Germany basically called a timeout.

So, good luck fighting that audit. You might be able to dodge regulations elsewhere, but in Canada, the goose fights back… and it comes with politely worded rebukes and receipts.
