The Maruti Suzuki Ciaz VDi was an Indian-market diesel sedan. At its 2014 launch, the Ciaz diesel range used a 1.3-liter DDiS 200 engine and a five-speed manual transmission. Maruti Suzuki offered four principal diesel trim levels: VDi, VDi+, ZDi and ZDi (Optional).
Later model years brought equipment changes, Smart Hybrid technology and revised variant names, so this guide is best treated as a map of the original Ciaz VDi-era lineup. When buying a used example, confirm its model year and equipment from the VIN, registration record and original brochure. A familiar badge does not guarantee an identical specification; automotive trim naming remains one of civilization’s quieter practical jokes.
Ciaz Diesel Trim-Level Comparison
| Variant | Position in range | Useful identifying details |
|---|---|---|
| VDi | Entry diesel | Core comfort equipment with the 1.3-liter diesel and five-speed manual |
| VDi+ | Lower-mid trim | Added convenience equipment, rear parking sensors, ABS with EBD and a driver airbag at launch |
| ZDi | Upper trim | More cabin equipment, dual front airbags and additional exterior trim |
| ZDi (Optional) | Top original diesel trim | Highest equipment level in the 2014 diesel range |
| VDi (O) | Later safety-focused base variant | Dual airbags, ABS with EBD, front seat-belt pretensioners and a driver seat-belt reminder |
Engine, Economy and Market
The original DDiS 200 diesel was rated at 66 kW (about 90 PS) and 200 Nm of torque. Maruti Suzuki initially quoted 26.21 km/l; the later Ciaz Smart Hybrid diesel received a certified 28.09 km/l figure under Indian test procedures. Neither number should be read as a promise for a used car in daily traffic, especially after years of maintenance, tires and enthusiastic use of the accelerator pedal.
Across the range, the Ciaz offered a 2,650 mm wheelbase and a 510-liter trunk, making it a practical family sedan by Indian-market standards. VDi and ZDi badges are most useful for identifying the broad equipment tier, while the build year determines the finer details. Buyers should prioritize service history, diesel-system condition and verified safety equipment over the badge alone.
