Tesla Delivers First Car Autonomously, Promptly Parking It in the Fire Lane

That’s it, y’all. The article title is the whole article.

parking in fire lane
Of all the places to deliver a car, the “NO PARKING FIRE LANE” spot had to be the first pick?

Tesla celebrated their first autonomous vehicle delivery after a new Model Y drove itself about 30 minutes from the Gigafactory in Austin TX to the customer’s home. It didn’t exactly stick the landing, as it parked directly in a clearly marked fire lane.

Please Don’t Block the Fire Lane Like an Autonomous Tesla

Don’t worry, Robotaxis do the exact same thing. They’ll drop you off wherever, and sometimes, that’s blocking the fire lane.

red curb means no park bro
Here’s a Robotaxi dropping off a passenger and then just hanging out in the fire lane. Pro tip, don’t do that.

Also, Why’d They Deliver It “One Day Early?” Let’s Check the Weather

I just can’t help myself, once I get started, I can’t stop, so I guess this won’t be that short of an article after all.

On Twitter, Elon Musk described the delivery as occurring a day ahead of schedule.

Which is odd, this sort of PR thing is usually planned in advanced and choreographed. They likely rehearsed the delivery, confirmed the route had a high chance of success without safety operator intervention, and worked with the car buyer to make sure they were available for the photo op. They don’t normally change the date last minute for these things.

That got me thinking… if Tesla Robotaxis can’t operate in the rain, I bet their autonomous vehicle delivery is fair-weather, too.

Sure enough, the forecast for tomorrow near the Gigafactory in Austin TX? It’s looking a bit iffy with a good chance of rain. That explains the last-minute change of schedule!

Laws Are Optional (If You’re Rich)

So, there you have it. As if firefighters needed another reason to hate Tesla FSD (which is notorious for rear-ending emergency vehicles), now Teslas now autonomously block the fire lane, too.

For the record, we’ve had a lot of coverage of the Tesla Robotaxi rollout. That isn’t ALL this publication is about. This week, the comedy just fell straight into my lap. Stay tuned for less Robotaxi content next week (unless they do something really funny).
