The 2018 Mercedes-AMG GT and Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 use closely related 4.0-liter biturbo V8 engines, but package them for entirely different jobs. The GT is a two-seat, rear-drive sports car with a rear-mounted dual-clutch transmission. The GLC 63 is a five-seat performance SUV with all-wheel drive, a useful cargo area and the deeply unnecessary ability to embarrass sports cars at traffic lights.

Sports Car or Performance SUV?
The AMG GT places its engine behind the front axle and its transmission at the rear, helping distribute mass through the chassis. Its low seating position, wide body and limited luggage space make the priorities obvious. This is the choice for steering feel, balance and the theater of arriving through a door located roughly at curb height.
The GLC 63 sends power to all four wheels and offers rear seats, folding seatbacks and everyday ground clearance. The nine-speed wet-clutch transmission is better suited to its broader operating range. Air suspension and multiple drive modes let it move between commuting and aggressive road use without requiring a second vehicle.
Choose the GT when driving is the destination. Choose the GLC 63 when passengers, luggage and poor weather remain stubbornly present. The shared V8 gives both unmistakable AMG character; the difference is whether that soundtrack comes with two seats or a Costco membership.
