Rivian Opens Commercial Van Pre-Orders

If you have ever seen an Amazon delivery van with a futuristic smile, you have already met Rivian’s electric delivery van (EDV). Until now, Amazon was the exclusive buyer for Rivian’s commercial lineup, but that is about to change. Rivian has officially Rivian Commercial Van (RCV) sales to businesses, with deliveries set to begin in April.

A New Option for Commercial Fleets

With Nissan exiting the commercial van market, businesses are looking for new options to replace workhorses like the NV200. Rivian’s EDV could be the right fit. The company offers both a 500-cubic-foot version and a smaller 700-cubic-foot model. They are built on the same platform as the R1T pickup and R1S SUV, so they already have a solid EV foundation.

Will Fleet Buyers Go Electric?

Rivian has made a name for itself with adventure-ready EVs and a single Silicon Valley commercial fleet, but commercial fleet buyers are a different breed. Trades workers, delivery drivers, and logistics companies need reliable, cost-effective vehicles that can handle long hours on the road. The big question is whether fleet managers will embrace EVs or stick with what they know.

Pickup truck buyers have been slow to adopt electric work trucks, with occasionally blistering feedback for EV pickup trucks, and fleet operators may have the same hesitation. Concerns about charging infrastructure, range limitations, and long-term durability will be major factors. If Rivian can prove that its electric vans are cost-effective and reliable over time, they may find a foothold in the market.

For now, Rivian is betting that businesses will want a greener, quieter, and potentially lower-maintenance option. Whether they bite remains to be seen.
