The 2017 Harley-Davidson Softail Deluxe and Road Glide Special are heavyweight cruisers shaped for different kinds of travel. The Deluxe is a low, traditionally styled Softail with whitewall tires and hidden rear suspension. The Road Glide Special is a bagger with a frame-mounted fairing, hard luggage and modern infotainment.
Specifications below use the 2017 model year, a useful reference because Harley introduced the Milwaukee-Eight 107 engine to its Touring line while the Deluxe still used the Twin Cam 103B.

Classic Cruiser or Equipped Bagger?
The Deluxe emphasizes appearance and low-speed accessibility. Floorboards, a broad seat and low center of gravity support relaxed cruising. It can tour with accessories, but its standard form is comparatively simple.
The Road Glide Special is equipped for distance. The frame-mounted fairing reduces steering input from crosswinds, while hard saddlebags, cruise control, ABS and the Boom! Box system support long highway days. The newer Milwaukee-Eight also provides stronger torque and improved refinement.
Choose the Deluxe for low seating and nostalgic style. Choose the Road Glide Special for luggage, wind management and regular touring. The Road Glide costs more and weighs more, but it also arrives with somewhere to put rain gear, which the weather generally regards as a personal challenge.
